We are still alive!! LOL!

I have not posted due to pure chaos in our schedules and then the holidays and just generally not a blogger type (I have found)...but rest assured...all is well.

Eliana came home on August 24 and became a citizen of the United States the moment she set foot on land. It has been so fascinating watching her since she came home.  The week we were there she really was like a fish out of water.  She ate very little and was tentative about everything.  I can't say as I blamed her.  The idea of being taken from a place (even if it is an orphanage) and just placed with people you hardly know must be so much to process.   Gabi and Eliana had a wonderful time getting to know each other.  It was great fun watching them smile and play with each other.   The days we were there were long, because we were never sure what to make of her schedule.  However, we did do a bit of sightseeing in the country that is our daughter's homeland.   She was born in Bulgaria, which is a beautiful country just north of Turkey and south of Romania.   I hope someday to be able to take her back to explore as a family.

Eliana did great on the flight home.   We had no problems what so ever.  Dare I say, I think I might like flying...shh...don't tell Jim.  I have had a phobia about flying FOREVER.  In fact, if it weren't to go get Eliana I would never have flown again.  So, who knows - maybe we will be able to travel a bit more.

Since she has been home we have had her endure all sorts of medical tests - the 72 hour EEG with video about made her go over the edge - and me too!  The good news - she is very healthy.  She did get some ear tubes because of some blockage, but her hearing is fine.

In October, we had a low-key celebration of her 3rd bday and she started preschool.  We have been gradually increasing her time at school and she seems to really enjoy it.

The relationship between Eliana and Ian is ever-changing.  He was a bit jealous at the beginning and sometimes still acts out.  Little pushes here and there.  I watch them very carefully.  She has recently started to really play with him a bit, which is so cute!   She is always watching him...which may not always be a good thing.

Overall, I would say that Eliana has become very comfortable with her new home and her new family.  I really feel like she has been with us forever.   I can honestly say that I NEVER imagined being able to love a child that I did not give birth to the same as I did my other children - boy was I wrong.  The children that God puts on our hearts are the children He wants us to raise as our own here on Earth no matter where or how they came to be with us.  It is a beautiful thing.

Soon my sweet one!! VERY SOON!

Well - I am clearly a slacker on the blogosphere....LOL!

SOOOOO - I have been so distracted I never introduced you to OUR DAUGHTER:

ELIANA MARIE THOMSON - (Eliana means God Answered)

(Please ignore her poor sore little nose:()

We found out a little over a week ago that we will be leaving Chicago on Friday, Aug. 16th and will be picking Eliana up on Monday, the 19th.  Gabi and I will be traveling that week to get her and arrive here in the US on Aug 24....we can't wait!!

Please say some prayers for our safe travels to Eliana and that her transition from the orphanage goes smoothly.
We could NEVER be at this point with all the love, prayers and financial support of all of you!!  THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART!!

What more can I do?

During this wait for a court date, I find myself wondering...what more can I do?  I keep seeing pictures of these little ones in Eastern Europe in need of families and my heart just aches.  I named this blog after the starfish story because I know that there is no way we can save all the orphans by ourselves; yet, a piece of my heart wishes I could.

God is the only one that knows after we get "Yasmine" home what will happen next....whether we will go back again...I can I assure you I will keep my heart open to whatever He places upon it.   I am in constant awe of the ability we have to change if we just open our minds and our hearts.  I say this because I am very cautious and risk averse person, and yet I totally closed my eyes and jumped on this adoption thing.   I know that God will take care of everything!

I do know that I can assure all my friends and family that I will forever be advocating for these little ones!!  They need a voice...or better yet voiceS!!!

I am hoping everyone is having a great summer and that the kids are not going too stir crazy yet!!

Trying to be Virtuous...Patience is a virtue - right?

I have not posted at all, because it would be about as exciting as watching paint dry.  Nothing has really been happening.  Jim and I have done everything we can at this point, and now we just wait to hear from the government in "Yasmine's" country.  We were told that the average time between trips is 4-6 months and we just passed the 2 month mark...not that I am counting - LOL!

The kids have all finished school and the there is a couple week lull until the summer activities really kick in...so except for an occasional baseball game, we are just relaxing.

_____________________________________________________

Given that this blog is about the adoption and the orphans, I really want to take a few minutes to address the needs of so many little ones.   The lists of children on Reece's Rainbow, and other similar organizations, contain endless numbers of names.   It is easy to think of them as just lists or as a problem that doesn't really impact me; however, they are not just lists or others' problems, they are real people....God's children, just like you and me.   We are called to help those less fortunate and to treat others as we would want to be treated....if you cannot adopt, please do what you can to help advocate for these children and pray and/or help those families who are adopting.

While Jim and I had talked about maybe adopting someday, we never really set any time frames or discussed details.  However, once I became aware of the plight of these little ones in Eastern Europe,  I felt called to go and save someone.   Jim took a bit of convincing, but was quick to acknowledge that our Ian would have likely found himself in an orphanage if he had been born in another part of the world.  We said lots of prayers.  It also really helped to watch our close friends, the Saders, go through the adoption process.

I realize that adopting a child with special needs can be very intimidating, yet, the "special needs" in question may be something very minor or easily repairable.   If you have ever felt a longing to adopt, I beg you to please consider a child with special needs.   Look through the available children, say prayers, ask questions about the special need, in other words, educate yourself about the situation.

In so many of the countries in Eastern Europe, the children age out of the baby houses around age 4 and are placed in adult mental institutions.  The figures are sobering as to how many of these children fail to survive more than a year or two.   PLEASE pray for the children that have already been transferred, that they may find their families.

God bless you!  Cathie

Sorry - I never posted this....OOPS! Long awaited day!

So after months of having looked at one picture and a brief description the day had arrived for us to meet our daughter...(not yet technically - but in our hearts).   We had to drive a couple of hours to get to her orphanage.  Upon arriving it looked like the building I had seen in so many pictures....stark and ugly...  We were waiting for what seemed like FOREVER in the playroom and then finally she was brought in!!   My heart melted immediately.   She has changed A LOT from the picture we had of her.   She was not a baby anymore, but a cute toddler.  Her hair was in a pony tail that bounced around when she moved.   She seemed interested in playing with us, but I couldn't help but think what must be going through her head....who are these people that are loving on me?  Why do they keep coming to play?  They seem to want me to smile and be happy....and giggle...

Each day we got to play with her for an hour in the morning and an hour in the late afternoon.   Between the emotions and the jet lag, I pretty much slept between the visits.  Jim just found it totally amusing how wiped I was.

With each day, "Yasmine" seemed to take to us more and more.   She LOVES to sit on me and do "row, row"...she giggles non-stop.

Given that I am not yet able to share her pics - I will tell you that she has the most mesmerizing blue eyes.  They are big and beautiful.   She also has a cute personality that we saw now and then when we were playing.  She is pulling up to stand and will walk if you hold her hand.   I have a feeling she may be walking on her own when we bring her home.  They have a walker they put her in but it is kind of short...it does not stop her at all...she loves to run along and turn.   I can tell that I will need to get in shape in order to keep up with her and Ian:)

Speaking of Ian, up until our trip I wasn't sure whether he had any concept of what was happening; however, I now believe that he has begun to understand that she is part of our family.   He was very protective of some of her toys (Lucky was trying to get them) - NO, "Yasmine's"!!   He talks about her often, and even told us one of the Nascar cars was his and one was hers.   It makes my heart smile to think about how much fun they will have together.

We pray everything left moves quickly so we can go get her!
THANKS for all the prayers and support - We REALLY appreciate it!!
Love, Cathie

We have our plane tickets!!

This last week we got our dates for our first trip!   This is the trip we get to meet "Yasmine" in person every day for a week.   While this has been a long road, I still can't believe that 2 weeks from tomorrow I will be meeting her....it seems so surreal.

Everyone keeps asking if I am packed....NO...I am still at the list making and setting aside stage.

Right up there with the excitement of getting our travel dates is knowing that very soon (hopefully in the next few days), we will get new info (and possibly new pictures) of her.   The info we have on her is a year old now and I am nervous to see how she is doing.   I pray that she is healthy and that her weight has been increasing.   I want to be able to take her some clothes, but until I know what she weighs I am not sure what size to bring.

For those of you who don't know me, I am essentially a NON-FLYER.   I have flown in a few times in my life, but I am scared to death and have panic attacks.  Typically I cannot even drive past O'hare without my heart racing.  Once we were thinking of flying somewhere, and just looking at the seating chart on the reservation page got me all freaked out.   Therefore, Jim has just resigned himself to the fact that we will be driving to destinations....except this one.

In making the decision to adopt from overseas, I have tried not to focus on the fact I will need to fly.  I am nervous - for sure- but at the same time I really feel that God has this.  Our adoption of "Yasmine" is so much bigger than any anxiety I have with flying.   I have been telling people that I am treating it sort of like going through my c-section surgeries...it is just part of the process to get the big reward!   I know she is going to be so worth it, just like Gabi, Xander and Ian.

Please keep us in your prayers as we prepare to travel, that all goes well with our flights, our meetings with "Yasmine" and with our kids here at home (my parents are so generously coming to stay with them).  In hindsight, my parents may be more afraid of what they will have to deal with that week than I am flying...LOL!

Before I sign-off, I would like to thank each and every person that has been praying for us and this journey and has supported us financially.   With this trip, we will be making another payment to our agency.

Take care and God bless!

Getting a little closer....

I am done with excuses on how bad I am about blogging.....I did want to provide everyone with a little update.

Last week we mailed our dossier (our paperwork) off to "Yasmine's" country.   Once it is translated, it will be submitted on our behalf to the appropriate government agency.   Then we will wait for a signature on a referral that asks us to come meet her.  From various posts - the timing of this process is completely unpredictable.   This is comforting, in that I have no real expectations as to the amount of time we should be waiting, but it is also making me anxious (in an excited way), to find out just how long it will be until I can meet her.  I am trying to keep my excitement in check because I do not want to be disappointed if she runs and hides from me crying.

As for the rest of the family - we are all healthy.   We are getting ready for Ian's annual meetings for his progress and then for his transition to kindergarten...I can't believe he is turning 5 in April.   Speaking of where the time has gone, we just turned in Gabi's schedule requests for her Freshman year!   AND she has started pointing out that she will be 15 in the fall and that she knows kids that have taken driver's training in the fall.  Unless she has been saving money I don't know about - she can learn to drive, but won't have anything to drive anytime soon.   Finally, Xander is finishing his elementary life up this Spring.   We are awaiting the first band concert to see how all the practice has been going.   It should be good!

Please continue to pray for us and our journey to bring "Yasmine" home....we have been feeling all or your support and appreciate it all more than you know.   Also - the end of last month there was a significant increase in our fund....THANK YOU!!!!  God Bless!

I have NO excuse!

The title of this post could (or SHOULD) be the answer for many things in my life.   I initially wrote it in terms of why I haven't blogged in forever, but I think it could go on and on....

The holidays were fun with both our families (separately), with the exception of 2 ER visits, a cast and a two-day stay.  I have been assured none of these were a result of my hospitality!   Gabi and I sang bright and early at the 9 am Mass on Christmas Day....it was a lot of fun...just really early.    We actually didn't open gifts until after, the kids were very patient.

The weather here is NOT what I call winter in the Midwest, which makes many people happy.  I am not one of them.  I grew up in Michigan and LOVE my 4 seasons.   This cold and no snow is just plain ugly and not very useful.

So while I had some guests over the holidays, I had NO excuse not to take a few minutes to blog.  I will say that I am overwhelmed by the donations we received for Yasmine!   Jim and I are humbled by the outpouring of love and support.   We are still waiting for some approvals on things we have filed with customs and then we will ship off our dossier to her country....which would mean a huge step towards getting to meet her.  I cannot wait!   We have decided on a name but we are not sharing just yet.  It is PERFECT!

For those of you who have wondered if the Russian ban on adoptions will impact us, the answer is no.   That said, I have several friends who are in the process of adopting from Russia, not to mention all of the orphans that are still waiting for their forever families.  I pray that things get resolved for the sake of the children.  They should not be used as political pawns.

As far as resolutions, I don't really make them - because I never keep them.  But I am going to try to get fit by running.  I have NO excuse as to why I have put on these pounds the last couple of years.  A group has been started to try to run a 5K every couple of months in order to raise money for Reece's Rainbow.  I figure if I can't do it for myself, I certainly can do it for the orphans.

Taking down the decorations and cleaning up I realize I have not done the best job in training my kids.  They are old enough to be able to help.  I have NO excuse as to why they don't help...I have just enabled them too much.  In case they are reading this...please note the past tense of enabled!  It is all going to change in 2013!!!

So as they are fighting over nothing, I must go and put my striped ref shirt on once again!

Happy New Year to everyone...may 2013 be a blessed and healthy year!

Heartache...

These last few weeks have been crazy busy getting ready for the holidays...we always have out of town guests and enjoy lots of cheer.  However, the last month has also included the loss of a precious little boy named Henry who was adopted last year from the Ukraine...and currently includes a gravely ill little guy named Ethan who steals my heart with his smile...he also happens to be adopted (domestically).

All too often children with special needs are left in foster care or orphanages because of the fear of what the disability may involve and what medical issues may come up.   We are so fortunate that Ian is generally very healthy...I don't EVER take that for granted.  I won't lie - I am very anxious about Yasmine's health.  The initial report looks to be that she is quite healthy...but I have also been told those reports can't always be relied upon.   With all of the heartache I have been witnessing others going through due to devastating challenges...it would be easy enough to just walk away from the adoption and avoid the potential pain...however - that will never happen because I know that Yasmine needs us - and we need her...no matter whether she is healthy or not.  I pray she is, but also know that we will face anything we need to for her.

There are so many children like Yasmine that need families...whether you are able to adopt, donate, pray, or share their stories - I beg you tell others about the plight of these children.  They deserve to have a mom and dad hug them and care for them when they are sick.   I also ask you to pray deeply about the idea of adoption...a year ago it was just a - "would like to do that"...not thinking it would ever be possible.  Now - having received a lot of guidance, we know that this is our what our journey is intended to be.

Please continue to pray for my friends who have lost their children and are facing the holidays without them and for my friends with sick little ones....I still believe in miracles!

It is never easy ....

As a parent, it is NEVER easy to hand your child over to be put under for surgery.   As a member of an extended DS family that has lost far too many little ones recently (some post-surgery), the task is made all that harder.

This morning, Ian had his ear tubes checked and some dental rehab...I hope this is the only rehab I ever have to deal with with my kids.   He had a number of issues and he was unwilling to let the dentist deal with them while awake.   I am happy to report that all went well...it took about 3.5 hours.   He is such a trooper and only complained for a bit post-op.

Not knowing Yasmine's health history in great detail, and not knowing if what we know is reliable, I am anxious to get her home and have her examined by a doctor here in the U.S.   As most children with Down syndrome are prone to a number of medical issues, I will feel much better when that exam is over.   I just pray all is well with her and surgery, no matter how minor, can be avoided.

Humility...

A friend recently asked how to respond when people make comments such as....'it's really irresponsible and rude to ask people for money to adopt. If you can't pay for it all upfront then you shouldn't be adopting.'   This statement would be fine if the child was a piece of merchandise...but, alas, the child is NOT.  I fully agree that I would not go out and seek donations so I could by a new car, because that helps no one other than myself.  The adoption of an orphan helps save a life - not to mention be a potential inspiration for others to adopt.

As an adopting parent of an orphan - I can tell you that this is most certainly a lesson in humility for me.   I am NOT comfortable with asking for donations.   Albeit, I never ever think twice about donating to other adoption funds.

The adoption of a child from an overseas orphanage is not a "purchase" that you save up for...it is a "calling" to save a child.   If it were only a matter of money I think that many people would adopt...however, it is not the money that is needed but the strong desire to help and raise a hopeless child.  These children do not have time for every family that hears that calling to save.  With costs exceeding $20,000 and up to $40,000 at times, who can just pull that out of their wallet on a whim??

In the Bible, God calls us to help the orphans...being that not everyone has the ability or calling to actually adopt an orphan, it is through advocating for these children, praying for the adopting families and donating to adoption funds that EVERYONE who wants to can do something to help the orphans.

Thank you to everyone that is doing something for the lesser children of this world...

Don't forget - we have a GiveAWAY going on right now!!  See prior post!

Lots of Thanks...and Giving!

This year Thanksgiving has taken on a new meaning for me.   I have always given thanks for everything God has given me, but this year I am also so thankful to Him for opening my eyes to those who do not have everything.  This encompasses a large part of the population..the homeless guys I see within a mile of my home, the people out East who suffered through hurricane Sandy, those who do not have the best of health, and of course - the orphans.

It is so easy to be "blind" to those less fortunate...but I ask everyone who reads this to try to make a conscience effort to pray to God to help you open your eyes and look to those that may be in need.   It could be as simple as donating that old bedspread or comforter to a local shelter or giving food to the local food pantry.  For those that are ill...reach out and let them know you are thinking of them and praying for their health.  If possible, offer to help with holiday stuff.

As the holidays approach and the kids are making lists of their wants...I think what would Yasmine's list look like:
1.  A family
2.  A cozy bed
3.  A "home" to call her own
4.  Medical care - if needed

I am SO HAPPY to say that Yasmine's list will be fulfilled sometime this next year and her list will look a lot different next year:)  However, there are hundreds of others like her that will have the same list again next year.  Whether you find yourself called to adopt into your family or to help the orphans in some way (advocating, donating, etc), please do what you can.  www.reecesrainbow.org.

Finally - thanks again to those who have made a donation on behalf of Yasmine...we really appreciate it.

Happy Thanksgiving to each and everyone of you.

To my precious little one....

While we have never met, or seen more than one picture of you, I have fallen hard for you.

I so look forward to the day we meet and you can finally know that we are welcoming you into our family.  You may be little, but I pray you are able to understand and find it comforting that God has helped us find each other.

Until that day - that cannot come soon enough - we keep you in our thoughts and prayers at all times.

Love to you my little one....

Yippee!!

We found out that the country Yasmine lives in has put a "hold" on her for us.  This is very exciting for us.  It seems to be making what seems like a bit of a dream more of a reality.  Without this hold, another agency could have placed her for adoption without us even knowing.  Sorry to keep showing the same picture but this is the only one we have!!

It seems to me that everyone who is adopting knows what they are doing; whereas, I feel like we are flying by the seat of our pants!   I need to focus on raising some of the money we will need for our journey to bring our daughter home.  I would LOVE and appreciate ideas...

We have been considering names and everyone seems to have some ideas or inputs and so far few of them are coming together...we still have some time but I would love to have her name.  Some of you may wonder - why does she need a name?  Doesn't she have one?  The name Yasmine is an alias...and we do not plan to keep her birth name as her first name.

In other news....we are all healthy, Jim is working crazy hours it seems all day every day, the kids teachers look like they are going to strike, Gabi was selected to be in the talent show at school, the dog is just as wild as ever and Dot just keeps on swimming....

Praying you all have a wonderful weekend.

So....what is happening??

Sorry again for the delay - my life really isn't all that interesting on a daily basis, yet at the same time I am too busy to always write.  It is kinda weird.

Currently we are close to our home study being complete.  Jim and I are taking the necessary educational courses (on-line) that we are required to take.  So far, the courses have given us some great ideas and things to think about.  Otherwise, we are waiting for the government to provide info on our background checks/fingerprints.   I have heard this can take quite awhile.  We did this back in September, so hopefully it is almost done.

In addition, I have been trying to figure out something or somethings that I could make and maybe sell to raise money for the adoption.  The cost of an international adoption is so high because the process involves a lot of documents and filings, the use of multiple agencies, flights and fees.   I know that it will be so worth it, but it worries me.  I know we are not the only ones in this situation, but we have taken the first step....following the call to adopt.  I truly believe that God never would have led us down this path unless he was going to see that we could make it to the end...our precious little girl.

Speaking of her...we are trying to find a name we can all agree on for her.  So far, we have not been very successful.  For those that are asking why are we changing her name...Yasmine is just an alias to protect her true identity.  We plan to incorporate her birth name as a middle name, but we think we are going to give her a new first name.  I have asked others that have gone down this path if it is difficult for the kids to adapt or if they have a lost sense of identity and in all cases it has been "no".

Please continue to pray for our family as we continue down this path.

THANK YOU to those that have prayed and/or donated to our adoption fund.  We appreciate everything!

Where did the week go?

I can't believe I have been bad for an entire week about blogging...oh - who am I kidding?!  I will be happy if I can keep this semi-up-to-date.

This week we had the local Buddy Walk.  It is an event to raise awareness and money for the local Down syndrome organizations.  It is always a lot of fun...however, this year God decided to add a little of his own fun in the form of a tornado warning!!   Fortunately, the storm was not that bad, but those who know me know I did not see much of it due to my hiding in the building.

We had our visit from our social worker for our home study on Saturday.  She is the sweetest person and we really enjoyed meeting her in person.   I also made a journey with Ian to downtown Chicago to get some special stamps on our documents (apostille), only to find out that one of them needs something before they will stamp it.  I am proud of myself for not throwing a hissy fit and for staying optimistic.  From stories I have heard about the adoption process this is like a pebble in my shoe.

I have been so excited watching the kiddos on Reece's Rainbow be moved to the My Family Found Me page.  It is overwhelming how many families are opening their hearts and homes.

Before the last few months, I really wanted to help the cause of the orphans in Eastern Europe and never knew if we would be able to adopt.  So, you ask, what types of things did I do or can you do?

1.  Pray for the little ones to find their families, pray for the families that are on their journey to adopt or may be seeking to be able to adopt.

2.  Donate to the funds of the little ones or the families that are adopting.  The costs of international adoptions are very high and involve a lot of work.  Many families more families would be open to adopting if there was more financial support.  All donations made through Reece's Rainbow are Tax-Deductible!!  So it helps you too.
Here is our link - http://reecesrainbow.org/47636/sponsorthomson

3.  Participate or coordinate fundraisers for those adopting.

Basically - there are lots of ways to help!!

We had a bump in our donations this week - I don't know from whom...but whomever you are - THANK YOU!!!!

Just a thought...

While I love this time of year, it seems that my system does not handle the change very well and all I want to do is sleep.  Unfortunately, I don't have time for this semi-hibernation.  So....I must push myself to go about prepare for our home study visit.  She is coming Saturday!  I am so worried that the house is going to look like a disaster zone as she arrives.

Speaking of our home study - after answering a ton of questions thus far - it is a wonder my 3 kids have survived!!  When we started our family way back when...we thought we were prepared...but we NEVER addressed some of the questions she has asked us.   The questions are really good ones that make you contemplate life with the child now and in the future.  I personally think the questions should be given to all couples contemplating actions that may result in children. If you are not ready to answer all of these questions - you should not be having kids!  I think I will make a list of the questions to give to my kids in the future when they have a serious significant other...better yet - what a great conversation starter if they are over for dinner..LOL!!

P.S.  I am not trying to make light of the home study process at all - it is invaluable and important to ensuring that our decision and those in our situation is made with all care.

I can tell this is going to be a long wait....

It is amazing to me that last week I saw her picture for the first time and now I can't stop thinking about her.  I wonder what her days are like...I pray she is well taken care of.   I really wish she could know that we are coming to bring her home...especially as winter approaches and she will long to snuggle tight with someone and will have no one.   On the positive side of things - each day that passes is one day closer to the day we will meet.

I try to picture what she is going to think of our family....we are a bit of a crazy bunch.   I really, really hope she loves music, dancing and singing...or she may find it unbearable here at our home.   Gabi and Ian LOVE to dance around and I think that Gabi sings more than she talks:)  She is blessed with the voice of an angel so that is just fine with us!   She also will need to like playing with electronics.  All too often it seems they are an additional part of the boys...she will likely think that they are actually connected to the devices at first!

We set about preparing for our homestudy visit and have a great deal of anticipation about the coming months....((HUGS)) to you little one so far away...may we meet very soon! Your Mom

Being comfortable is overrated!

As the upcoming addition to our family becomes more of a reality..I think about the fact things were finally just starting to get comfortable.  Not easy mind you, but comfortable.  The routines get crazy sometimes, but they are our "normal."  However, the more comfortable I find things, the more my mind wonders to those that are less fortunate.   Which ultimately makes me feel more UNcomfortable.   I am excited in knowing that my life will be "uncomfortable" so that our little girl can finally be with her family that will love her to the end of the earth and back.

I know that adoption is not for everyone; however, I pray that most people search deep and push themselves to be a little uncomfortable in some way so that others in this world that are suffering can be made a bit more comfortable.
